Why Are Eye Exams Important?

Eye exams are your first step towards properly detecting and managing various eye diseases and conditions before they damage your vision.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends adults between 18 and 64 undergo an eye exam every two years, or annually if you are at-risk. However, most optometrists agree the best way to protect your vision is by having eye exams annually, whether you are at-risk or not.

Adults over 65 should have an eye exam every year. However, if there are concerns, your optometrist might recommend more frequent appointments.

Risk factors for vision loss may include:

  • A family history of eye diseases
  • Occupations with a risk of damaging your eyes
  • Having previous eye surgery
  • Medications with ocular side effects
  • Previous or current eye injuries
  • High refractive errors
  • Having functional vision in only one eye
  • Medical conditions like diabetes

What to Expect From an Eye Exam

Your optometrist will start the eye exam by having a discussion with your personal and family’s health history. This conversation will help your optometrist ensure your information is up-to-date and give you the opportunity to express any questions or concerns you may have about your eyes or vision. These questions can help your optometrist tailor the exam to best suit your needs.

During the exam, your optometrist will assess your vision and refraction using an eye chart and a digital phoropter. These instruments help your optometrist determine the prescription you may need to see your best.

Following this, your optometrist will assess your ocular health using technology like threshold visual field testing, macular pigment optical densitometer (MPOD), tonometry, wide-field fundus photography, and OCT (optical coherence tomography). These will help your optometrist detect and diagnose any eye conditions or diseases you may have.
