What Happens During the Contact Lens Exam Process?

The Eye Exam

Comprehensive eye exams are the first step to determining if you’re a candidate for contact lenses. Your optometrist will check your prescription and establish if your eyes are healthy enough for contact lenses.

During the fitting process, your optometrist will take detailed measurements of your corneal parameters, including shape and size. You’ll also be fitted with a pair of contact lenses, with adjustments made if needed.

The contact lens trial is an opportunity to take the contact lenses home with you to see how well you adjust to wearing them. Your optometrist will also book a follow-up appointment to make sure the lenses are performing as expected before ordering a supply for you.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric contacts are designed for people with astigmatism to correct different prescriptions along the vertical and horizontal axis. These lenses are designed with a specific weight to help prevent them from rotating.

Multifocal contact lenses have multiple prescriptions built in to help you see at a variety of distances, and are used to correct presbyopia. Multifocal contacts are also recommended to help manage myopia progression.

Aspheric contact lenses are specially designed to help mitigate an issue called spherical aberration.

When light passes through a curved surface, the curvature can cause spherical aberrations or a loss of definition. Both your cornea and your crystalline lens have a degree of natural spherical aberration that compensate each other, but with age, spherical aberration can increase, causing blurry vision.

Aspheric contact lenses can help mitigate this issue.

Scleral contact lenses have a larger diameter than traditional contact lenses, allowing them to sit on the sclera (whites) of your eye and “vault” over your cornea, making them an excellent choice for people with corneal issues like keratoconus.

Ortho-K (orthokeratology) contact lenses are a special type of contact lens designed to help reshape your cornea while you sleep. The result is clear, crisp vision throughout the day without the use of glasses or contacts.

Optometrists often recommend this type of contact lens to children and adults who are looking to manage symptoms of myopia.

If you have trouble wearing traditional contacts, you may find the comfort you crave with hybrid contact lenses. Hybrid contact lenses are made with 2 distinct materials; a rigid gas-permeable center to provide you with clear vision, and a soft, comfortable hydrogel skirt.

Just like the popular eyeglass lenses, Transitions contact lenses dim in bright light to help provide you with comfortable vision outdoors and inside.
