Digital Eye Strain Relief in Riverside

Comfortable Vision Using Any Device

While we may love our smartphones, computers, and tablets, these devices may lead to visual discomfort if we overuse them.

If you’re working on a device for hours on end, and start to have symptoms such as blurred vision, fatigue, or dryness, there’s a chance you’re experiencing digital eye strain. To help manage your symptoms, please request an appointment with our eye care team, so we can keep you comfortably connected for longer.

What Causes Digital Eye Strain

Research suggests that digital eye strain can occur from focusing on a close-up object for too long, reducing how often you blink, and vary your focus, leading to ocular discomfort.

Some symptoms of digital eye strain can include:

  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Blurry vision

The Role of Blue Light

Blue light can come from a variety of sources, including your devices, but the largest source of blue light is the sun. Blue light helps to control your circadian rhythm, sending signals to your brain to differentiate day from night.

According to some studies, too much blue light has a correlation with sleep deprivation. If you’re using a digital device before going to bed, you may have a harder time falling asleep because your brain is interpreting the blue light as a cue for day time.

Digital Eye Strain Relief

There are a couple of things we can recommend to help manage the effects of digital eye strain:

The 20/20/20 Rule

The 20/20/20 rule is a common practice that can help alleviate eye strain quickly. After 20 minutes of close-up work, spend 20 seconds looking at an object about 20 feet away.

Your positioning in front of your monitor can affect how the screen affects your eyes. Here are some tips to help you find the best ergonomic position for you:

  • Keep your monitor about an arm’s length away and slightly below your line of sight.
  • Adjust your seat so that your knees are about level with your hips.
  • Your hands and wrists should be level with your elbows.

Artificial tear drops are an easy way to help alleviate some symptoms of eye strain, particularly if you aren’t blinking enough. Please consult your optometrist before buying any over-the-counter eye drops.
