What Are Dry Eyes?

Two main issues cause dry eyes: insufficient tear production or poor quality tears. When your tear production and quality are compromised, it can lead to a variety of dry eye symptoms.

Your tear film, which bathes the surface of your eyes, is made up of 3 distinct ingredients: mucin, water, and oil. Each one of these ingredients has a special role to play in your ocular comfort:

  • Mucin is located on the tear film’s innermost layer and is responsible for ensuring your tears adhere to your eye’s surface.
  • Water, in the middle of the tear film, helps keep your eye feeling hydrated and comfortable. Water is also capable of washing away small particles that may land on the surface of the eye.
  • Oil is found on the outermost layer of your tear film, and is responsible for sealing in the other layers, preventing them from evaporating.

A variety of things can affect your tear film. Some of them include:

When your tear film is compromised, you may experience symptoms like:

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Stringy mucus in or around your eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity

Treatments We Offer

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, we can prescribe a variety of different medications to help reduce inflammation and induce a healthy tear film, leading to more comfortable eyes.

Punctal plugs are small devices that are inserted into your tear ducts (puncta). They help prevent your tears from draining too fast, allowing your eyes to stay hydrated and comfortable.

This is a simple in-office procedure.
