Myopia Control in Riverside

What is Myopia

Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors around the globe. Currently, about 40% of the US population is affected by varying degrees of nearsightedness.

Myopia occurs when your eye elongates over time. When this happens, the light that enters your eye bends (refracts) and focuses in front of your retina instead of on it, resulting in blurry distance vision. Myopia can lead to symptoms, including headaches, and eye strain.

Myopia is often hereditary, but some researchers believe that spending too much time doing near tasks, and not enough time outdoors, may increase your risk of developing the condition.

Myopia During Childhood

Myopia has the ability to affect children, even those as young as 3 years old.

It can cause a variety of problems for your child as they grow up, most notably, their ability to see and succeed in school.

The best way to manage these symptoms is by making sure your child has regular eye exams. Eye exams can detect these problems early, and allow us to make the necessary adjustments to set your child up for success.

Myopia Treatments

Ortho-K contact lenses are worn overnight to reshape your cornea while you sleep. By doing this, you can enjoy clear vision throughout the day without using glasses or contact lenses.

Multifocal lenses have been used to manage the progression of myopia.

Prolonged near focusing, while wearing your distance correction for myopia, may cause eye strain at near. This may make your eyes elongate even more, resulting in more severe myopia. Multifocals help correct this issue by providing clear vision at all distances, preventing your myopia from progressing.

Atropine eye drops can also help slow the progression of myopia. Atropine eye drops are a prescription medication that relaxes your focusing mechanism.
