What is Sports Vision Enhancement?

Sports vision enhancement is a treatment program designed to help athletes from all sports and skill levels achieve the visual skills they crave to excel at their game.

Athletes spend a great deal of time and energy training their bodies to perform at peak levels. They practice regularly to improve speed, endurance, balance, technique, precision, and accuracy. However, some athletes may struggle with visual skills, such as eye-hand coordination.

Our specialists can provide a series of exercises tailored to your visual and sport-specific goals. The exercises may vary, but all are dedicated to helping you reach a higher level of function:

  • Multiple object tracking
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Visual imagery training

Who is Sports Vision Enhancement For?

Do you rock practices but have trouble during games and competitions? Is your game-time performance variable or “hit or miss”? Are you more likely to “choke” in high stress, clutch situations but perform better when little is on the line?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, then you may benefit from sports vision training.

Sports vision enhancement is not for one type of athlete, it’s for all athletes. Some common sports our patients are involved in include:

  • Baseball/Softball
  • Hockey
  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Soccer
  • Football

But this is just the tip of the iceberg; our clinic has also helped patients in less-traditional sports, including paintball and esports.

Why Sports Vision Training?

Sports vision training isn’t limited to a “one-size-fits-all” regiment; we can adapt your vision training to help serve you best.

Even small adjustments, like a basic contact lens correction, can lead to huge benefits on the field. When these smaller solutions aren’t enough, we can help develop and curate a range of visual exercises to help get your vision where it needs to be for you to succeed.

Sports vision training can challenge athletes in ways they’ve never been challenged before. At the beginning of training, athletes may struggle with improving their specific visual skills, but over time they will have a “eureka” moment when their clinical improvement translates into a better performance.

The skills our team helps develop will serve athletes for the rest of their life, in sports, school, work, and everyday life!

What Does Sports Vision Enhancement Look Like?

Sports vision training will look different depending on the athlete and type of sport they play. The evaluation is mostly standardized which includes optimizing visual “hardware” such as visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.

The visual training aspect usually starts with basic training which includes visual “calisthenics” like focus flexibility and eye teaming skills. Our goal is to help improve athletic performance using the tools necessary to be successful, on or off the field.

Some athletes will need to concentrate on basic visual functions before tackling higher-level skills. Sports vision training consists of progressive tasks that build upon previously mastered abilities.

This training may take 2-3 months or longer, depending on the athlete.

What Kinds of Technology Do We Use For Sports Vision Enhancement?

Technology is an integral part of how we play sports today and has revolutionized how we think about, evaluate and train in sports vision. At Sport & Sun, we use the latest tech to help our athletes succeed.

The Right Eye eye tracking technology gives our sports vision specialists an in depth look at eye tracking/eye teaming skills, and reaction time among others. The Sports Vision EyeQ report takes thousands of data points over a series of tests and offers easy to read reports showing how the athlete’s vision compares against his/her peers.

The Senaptec Sensory Station is a comprehensive all in one evaluation and training instrument that tracks 10 visual and sensorimotor tests that analyze the athletes visual system. Training modules help athletes with areas of opportunity to improve their visual functioning that transfers to improvement on the field!

The Senaptec Strobe is a device that uses flicker technology to improve the neural connections between the eyes and the brain. The lenses in the Strobe alternate (flicker) from clear to dark “removing visual information” for the athlete while training. This forces the athlete to process visual information quicker and more efficiently thus improving reaction times.

How Much Does It Cost?

At Sport & Sun, we offer package pricing for sports vision enhancement that incorporates a comprehensive eye evaluation, initial/progress sport vision evaluations, 9 training sessions, and a sports vision training kit. This complete package will usually take 2 to 3 months and costs $1210. Sports vision training is usually not covered by medical or vision insurance plans.

Evaluations can last from 30 to 45 minutes. Training sessions usually last for 45 to 60 minutes.
